In junior rugby news:
Old Salts RFC combined under-10’s and under-11’s got 2016 off to a flying start at home to Woodrush RFC.
It was their first competitive fixture since the Christmas and New Year break and they eventually eased to a 24-9 victory.
Despite going behind to 2 early tries, Olds Salts hit back with tries from Jack Saunders, George Dillon and Alfie Attridge. Connor Fisher and George Griffin added a further two tries to see Old Salts take an 8-3 lead at the end of the first period.
Woodrush rallied and, although the second period was evenly matched, a further three tries from Griffin, two from Matt Dillon and one by Attridge, helped Old Salts extend their lead to 14-8.
Good defensive play by Bradley Shattock and Callum Rogan ensured Old Salts retained their lead. George Dillon once again proved to be invaluable in defense too, regaining advantage in seemingly lost causes. Ollie Smith also enhanced his reputation by reading the game well at scrums. Warwick Dove provided valuable support and was instrumental in setting up tries.
Old Salts clicked into first gear during the last third of the game which saw the team run in ten tries. Griffin took his tally to seven for the match, a fantastic effort.
There were further tries for Matt Dillon, who took his tally to 4, Fisher, Attridge, Bradley Shattock and Ollie Smith.
Captain for the day Jack Saunders led by example and capped a fine performance with a further try for himself. The man of the match honor went to Leo Francom-Gladders for his determination.
